This Week's Comics

Batman #901 ("Dusk to Dawn"): Looks like we're teeing up a Penguin Twins plot as well as the Bat/Cat war we've been promised after Knight Terrors. In the mean time, while Bruce deals with his shit the Batfamily actually got a chance to be happy together for a moment. Not that it'll last. Oh and Failsafe is still out there, somewhere....
(And yes, now that Batman has dual numbering on the cover, I'll be using the legacy number here going forward.)
Fantastic Four #701 ("If Memory Serves..."): New villain alert! (Xargorr, the cover's Mystery Menace. Gotta love Alex Ross cover art for your first appearance.) Giving Sue and Alicia a chance to show off, and Johnny a chance to, well, that, but also be a total dork.
Also I am apparently on a roll of getting my letters to Marvel Comics printed. Feels good.
It feels a bit less good that Marvel is apparently having printing issues given that there were a couple pages with print streaks and, more damningly, a few that were just misaligned vertically to the point where text was almost cut off at the top of the page. This really shouldn't be happening given how much single issues cost.
The Flash #800 ("A Celebration of Wally West"): This was, honestly, the frustrating kind of Big Milestone Issue—the kind that's a mini-anthology but doesn't really connect to the ongoing story in the title. The stories were all pretty fun (although Williamson's had too much Barry Allen in it) but what I'd have really liked is for anything to follow up on #799, which feels like it will stand as the end of Adams's run proper. I much prefer the kind of Big Milestone Issue that we got with Batman #900 or Fantastic Four #700 that's an actual story with an expanded pagecount.
The final story was a preview of the upcoming Spurrier/Deodato run. I have to say that the first page involving Wally lying to Linda (as well as subsequent developments on that subject) was not exactly an auspicious beginning but I guess we'll see how things go in September. And I know that I'm not exactly inclined to to give the benefit of the doubt because I'm already missing Adams's run, which in a just world would have lasted significantly longer. So much for a book that I could reliably count on to for a monthly (or biweekly, recently) dose of fun.
My Flash collection is up to 268 issues (plus annuals and specials) after last weekend, including all but four of the Baron and Messner-Loebs issues. Really hoping to track those down soon.
Shazam! (vol. 4) #2 ("Meet the Captain! Chapter 2"): I am delighted that the space dinosaur subplot is continuing (now with extra bureaucracy!). Also, hello Psycho-Pirate, I'll always associate you with Crisis on Infinite Earths and Animal Man. Shorter than normal this week because of a couple epilogues, one of which leads into Knight Terrors next month. At least this tie-in should actually continue the ongoing's story than some others I could mention (and won't be pulling).
